The Atkins Diet

Atkins Diet(Daily Diet Motivation) The Atkins Diet was created by Robert C. Atkins and is a high fat, high protein, and low carb diet. It focuses on the belief that a diet that is high in refined carbohydrates, such as sugar, increases the amount of insulin, a hormone that stimulates the storage of calories as fat, which your body produces. The diet restricts your intake of carbohydrates which forces your body to metabolize fat in order to produce energy. This is also known as Benign Dietary Ketosis. You can lose a significant amount of weight on the Atkins diet but it also restricts important food groups like dairy, grains, and fruits. The Atkins diet is not for everyone such as pregnant women, children, athletes, and people with kidney disease.

The Atkins Diet emphasizes heavily on the consumption of protein and fat. People on the Atkins Diet are allowed to eat unlimited amounts meat, fish, poultry, eggs, and some cheeses. All vegetable oils are also allowed and condiments that are high in fat such as butter, sour cream, mayonnaise, and guacamole. Small amounts of non-starchy vegetables and certain fruits are also allowed. The Atkins Diet also restricts the intake of carbohydrates. Some foods that are restricted are bread, pasta, cereals, starchy vegetables, dairy products (except those stated above), many fruits, and foods containing refined sugars.

Principles

The main idea of the Atkins diet is that calories do not matter. The diet heavily restricts foods that are rich in carbohydrates but allows unlimited consumption of foods that are high in fat and protein. This is based on the belief that diets high in sugar and refined carbohydrates increase the amount of insulin produced. Insulin helps your body to store calories as fat. When fewer carbohydrates are consumed, less insulin is secreted which results in less fat storage. Also without availability of carbohydrates, your body is forced to burn stored fat as energy which is known as Benign Dietary Ketosis. Even the smallest amounts of carbs in your diet can prevent Benign Dietary Ketosis which will then prevent weight loss for those on the Atkins diet.

The Atkins diet is divided into four parts: Induction, Ongoing Weight Loss, Premaintenance, and Maintenance.

The Induction phase takes place during the first 2 weeks of the diet and limits carbohydrate intake to just 20 grams a day. Fruits, bread, grains, starchy vegetables, and dairy products (except for butter, sour cream, and some cheeses) are not allowed.

The Ongoing Weight Loss is when dieters are to experiment with different amounts of carbohydrate consumption until they find the amount of carbohydrate intake that allows them to keep losing weight. Those on the diet are encouraged to continue this level of carb intake until they lose the desired amount of weight.

During the Premaintenance and Maintenance phases, people on the diet are to determine the amount of carbohydrates they can consume to help maintain their weight. To prevent the regaining of the weight, dieters must continue this level of carbohydrate intake, sometimes for the rest of their lives. It is advised to limit your intake to no more than 60 grams a day to keep the weight off. Regular exercise and supplements are recommended as part of the weight loss program.
